Science Benefits

A letter writer (Aug. 13) charges NASA with wasting billions on space travel “with no important results.” I happened to read an article the same day which pointed out that space-developed solar cells were being used to power refrigerators permitting the delivery of vaccines to tens of millions of otherwise inaccessible children around the world. If it weren’t for taking the risks of pure science, we would still be living in caves.
