Whitmarsh Finds Strength to Advance

Mike Whitmarsh has not recovered from a stomach flu he got at a tournament in Portugal last week, but Saturday he found the strength to play in five matches at the Miller Lite U.S. Championships in Hermosa Beach with partner Mike Dodd.
Fourth-seeded Whitmarsh and Dodd stayed alive by winning all five matches and earning a spot in today’s losers’ bracket semifinal.
They capped the day with an impressive 15-7 victory over second-seeded Adam Johnson and Jose Loiola.
“I’m feeling much better than yesterday, but I still feel extremely weak,” Whitmarsh said. “I’m starting to sweat it out of my system.”
Top-seeded Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes had little trouble staying undefeated. They beat No. 8 Brent Frohoff and Ricci Luyties, 15-8, in the morning and No. 5 Bill Boullianne and Eric Fonoimoana, 15-10, in the afternoon.
Kiraly and Steffes meet sixth-seeded Rob Heidger and Troy Tanner in today’s winners’ bracket final.
