The Leiters Seeking Sibling Matchup

Montreal Expo pitcher Mark Leiter and his brother, Al Leiter of the Florida Marlins, will be watching with envy tonight when Ramon and Pedro Martinez face off at Olympic Stadium.
If the Leiters get their wish, within two weeks they will become the second brother combination to face one another this season.
Al Leiter said he will talk with the Marlins this week about juggling the rotation so he can face Mark for the first time in their careers when the two teams meet eight times in the next 2 1/2 weeks.
“We’re always talking about it,” Al Leiter said. “Some people say, ‘Why would you want to face your brother? Hey, you kidding me, it would be a blast.”
Said Mark Leiter: “The whole family wants to see it happen.”

Center fielder Brett Butler woke up a little sore, but once again Wednesday, he took extra batting practice and ran sprints in the outfield during his comeback bid from tonsil cancer.
“I slept ‘til 11 o’clock,” Butler said, “I think it was a comedown from [Tuesday]. But I felt better hitting, and I even hit the wall today [during batting practice]. It’s time to get back to work and get back to where I need to be.”
Butler is scheduled to face reliever Darren Hall this afternoon in a simulated game.

Third baseman Tim Wallach, who spent 14 years in the Expo organization, was given a rousing one-minute standing ovation during a pre-game ceremony honoring him. . . . Although New York Met Manager Bobby Valentine said he will offer Tom Lasorda a coaching job for the 1997 season, few Dodgers expect him to accept.
