City to Seek Firm to Review Hellman Site
In the first step toward finding a new archeological firm to conduct studies at the Hellman Ranch site, the city’s Archeological Advisory Committee will appoint as many as five of its members to sit on an interview panel.
The 10-member committee will make the appointments at a special meeting starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the City Council Chambers, 211 8th St.
A new panel is needed because the City Council last month ignored the advisory committee’s recommendation and terminated a contract with Environmental Research Archeologists.
Council members said the company’s lengthy and costly studies failed to develop into an acceptable project design.
A 5-year-old city ordinance requires that undeveloped land be researched for possible archeological sites before being developed. A residential subdivision and a golf course have been proposed for about 200 acres of the Hellman Ranch property.
In addition to members of the advisory committee, two council members will sit on the interview panel.
