Antonovich Awards Grant for Murals

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has announced that he will award a San Fernando Valley group $1,500 to paint murals on freeway underpasses in the northwest Valley.

Antonovich granted the funds to the Devonshire Area Community Police Advisory Board, which will use the money for its Adopt an Underpass Mural Program.

The murals are painted by schoolchildren to cover over graffiti, Antonovich said.

“The goal of this program is to beautify the community while preventing graffiti and instilling pride within the community by having the students of the local schools paint the murals,” Antonovich said in a written statement.

The advisory board, which started the program in the spring of 1995, will use the money to expand the murals to other areas of the northwest Valley, Antonovich said.

The money comes from Antonovich’s 5th District discretionary funds. Supervisors use discretionary funds to support community groups or charities.
