Sewage Spill Closes Part of Doheny Beach

DANA POINT — A portion of Doheny State Beach at the mouth of the San Juan Creek was closed Tuesday after 2,000 gallons of sewage ran down the creek and into the ocean.
Larry W. Honeybourne, chief of the Health Care Agency’s water quality section, said the spill was caused by a blockage in Mission Viejo at a sewage connector about 7:40 a.m. that is operated by the Moulton Niguel Water District at Oso Parkway and Montanoso Drive.
“There were initial estimates of 3,000 gallons from a manhole blockage,” Honeybourne said. “But about 1,000 gallons were recovered and the remaining 2,000 gallons went into Oso Creek.”
The spill traveled from Oso Creek into Trabuco Creek, down San Juan Creek and then into Doheny State Beach, prompting a closure because of the potential health risk. The beach was closed 500 feet on both sides of the creek mouth, Honeybourne said.
The closure is expected to be in effect through today.
