WASHINGTON — A story about a group of sixth-graders competing in the Academic Bowl and pictures illustrating a giant being brought to life to protect Jews in 16th century Prague have won the top two honors in children’s literature.
The American Library Assn. gave the 1997 Newbery Medal to E.L. Konigsburg for “The View From Saturday” (Simon & Schuster) about the academic competition. The Newbery committee called it “a unique, jubilant tour de force characterized by good humor, positive relationships, distinctive personalities and brilliant storytelling.”
The Randolph Caldecott Medal went to David Wisniewski for his work in “Golem” (Clarion). The committee cited Wisniewski for his “powerful visual interpretation of the universal themes of power and redemption using intricate cut-paper illustrations.”
The association announced the honors, known as the Academy Awards of children’s literature, Monday.
