Flores Gets ‘Free’ Ride to Kentucky

David Flores, who has never ridden in a Kentucky Derby, will be going this year, riding Santa Anita Derby winner Free House in Louisville on May 3.
Flores, 29, replaces Kent Desormeaux, who rode Free House on Saturday in the Santa Anita Derby. Desormeaux has another potential Kentucky Derby contender in Pacificbounty, his mount this Saturday in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. Pacificbounty has won three consecutive races with Desormeaux riding.
“Kent rode our horse beautifully,” said John Toffan, one of Free House’s owners. “But he didn’t want to commit to the horse until after Saturday.”
Flores was aboard for two of Free House’s four victories--a maiden race at Fairplex Park in September and the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita last month.
