Animal Adoption Drive Scheduled

Officials with Los Angeles Animal Services are hoping Valley residents this weekend will make room in their hearts and their homes to adopt a furry friend.
Saturday marks the second annual Adoptathon, where animal shelters across the United States and Canada will entice residents to take in as many homeless cats and dogs as possible.
Last year residents adopted about 125 cats and dogs from city Animal Services’ shelters during the Adoptathon--a 115% increase over an average Saturday at the shelters, said Peter Persic, spokesman for Animal Services.
Hundreds of dogs and cats are available, both purebreds and mixed breeds, he said.
Adoption fees will vary and cover the cost to spay or neuter and vaccinate the animals. English-speaking and bilingual staff members will assist people in picking out pets, Persic said.
All those who adopt pets will receive a free starter kit, with either dog or cat food and information about pet care.
The Adoptathon will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Valley Animal Service Center, 20655 Plummer St. in Chatsworth and at the East Valley Animal Service Center, 13131 Sherman Way in North Hollywood. For more information, call Animal Services at (213) 893-8400.
