Spill Creates Some Brash Cash Thieves

OAKLAND — It was a mad dash for the cash Thursday when a noon collision between an armored truck and a car dumped bags of money onto the street and passersby took advantage of the opportunity.

“Everybody was stealing money,” a witness said.

The American Courier Service truck lost control and tipped over, leaving the two guards inside struggling to get out, Police Officer Arturo Bautista said. While they tried to squirm out of their seat belts, passersby began helping themselves to the unexpected largess.

Bautista said police found some money hidden in a nearby house and took five people in for questioning. Two more people were questioned after they drove by the house and witnesses identified them as having taken some of the money.

The amount of money taken was not revealed.
