NEWHALL — Hoping to take his career to the college level, Mike May resigned as Hart High boys’ basketball coach Thursday.
“I want to get into the college scene and see what I can do,” said May, who averaged 19.4 victories in five seasons at Hart.
“You tell your athletes to progress and try to hit the highest level you can. I don’t know how it will go for me.”
May, 41, is looking to go back to Provo, Utah.
The former standout guard at El Camino Real High played two seasons at Brigham Young. He started as a junior but was beaten out in his senior year by Danny Ainge.
May hopes to get an assistant coaching position at Utah Valley State College.
“I’ve been in contact with the coach up there and they haven’t officially opened it up,” May said. “It’s a possibility, but nothing definite.”
May plans to stay at Hart as a teacher and pursue a job as a volunteer college assistant if he is not hired at Utah Valley State.
May said his growing business creating programs for foreign exchange students was also a contributing factor.
May was one of the area’s top coaches in his half decade at Hart. His teams were 97-37, winning four Foothill League championships and finishing second once.
“The coaching at Hart has been great for me,” he said. “I’ve had great kids and real good support from the administration, the other coaches on campus and the parent and booster clubs. It’s been a good five years.”
