North Hollywood Bounced by Grant

North Hollywood High failed to turn Dennis Moran’s grounder into a double play with one out in the eighth inning and Augustine Quevedo scored to give Grant a 4-3 upset in a Valley Pac-8 Conference baseball game at Grant on Thursday.

Danny Schrader, running to second, eluded the tag of Husky second baseman Esteban Saldivar, allowing Quevedo to score.

On the previous play, third baseman Edgar Pineda threw wildly trying for a force at second, allowing Quevedo to go from first to third.

North Hollywood had the bases loaded with no out in the top of the eighth, but Jesus Zepeda struck out, Victor Slois was out trying to score on a wild pitch and Vitaly Taub grounded to third.

Quevedo had three hits for the Lancers (9-14, 6-7 in league play).

Cesar Soto pitched a nine-hitter with seven strikeouts for North Hollywood (20-6, 10-3).

Monroe 13, Reseda 11--The Vikings scored two runs with two out in the top of the seventh when left fielder David LeBeau dropped Anthony Gaston’s fly ball in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

The Regents (8-11, 4-8) out-hit Monroe, 17-15, with Tony Chavez going five for five with two home runs and six runs batted in.

Jose Nocera had three hits, including a homer and three RBIs for Monroe (9-12, 4-8).

El Camino Real 6, Taft 5--After blowing leads of 2-0 and 4-3, the Conquistadores (13-9, 8-5) scored two runs in the seventh inning of a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Woody Cliffords doubled home Joel Morales with the tying run and Joe Merchan singled home Jared Maiden to break the tie.

Cliffords finished with three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning. Merchan and Morales each had two hits.

Daniel Scott had three hits for the Toreadors (13-9, 7-6).

Van Nuys 6, Canoga Park 4--Angel Barajas went three for three with a home run, a double and three RBIs for the Wolves (2-16, 2-11) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Barajas got the victory in relief of starter Jose Avila, who ran into control problems in the second inning.

Chatsworth 7, Birmingham 0--Greg Wold pitched a one-hitter with three strikeouts for the Chancellors (15-7, 10-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.

Tim Weigand had a two-run home run in the second inning for Chatsworth and Tom Morefield added two hits.

Granada Hills 13, Cleveland 8--Peter Gunny had a three-run triple during a nine-run sixth-inning rally for the Highlanders in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland (12-10, 8-5).

Mike Wong had three hits and scored twice for Granada Hills.

Mike Schultz had two hits for the Cavaliers, driving in two runs and scoring twice.
