FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass bite has slowed some, but some big fish being caught. Kevin Sanders, Lancaster, 9-8 bass, on Wham Fisheze lure. Frank Kuys, Long Beach, 8-14 and 7-0 bass, on crawdads. Jim Buckley, Granada Hills, five bass, largest 9-0, on crawdads. Crappie action picking up in both lakes, biting on night crawlers and mini-jigs.

18. LAKE PIRU--Coves yielding good catches of largemouth bass. Largest, a 7-pounder by Ernie Weems, Van Nuys, on white spinnerbait at San Felicia. Crappie bite steady. Matt Green, Burbank, 16 crappie, on white mini-jig at north end. Trout bite slowing, best in middle of lake at about 50 feet.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth bass beginning to spawn and are biting in shallows on night crawlers, plastic worms and crankbaits. Bluegill fair on mealworms in backs of coves. Catfish fair on mackerel in channel. Occasional striped bass being caught near dam.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout and largemouth bass best bets, with limits of both reported. Trout best for trollers using Needlefish lures at 40 feet at west end. Dean Gordon, Santa Ynez, 4-8 trout at dam. Bass best on spinnerbaits and crankbaits at about 10 feet. Catfish picking up, biting on mackerel.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass bite has slowed, but not for some. Lenny Kerly, Simi Valley, 12-0 bass, on shad. Rod Thigpin, Santa Paula, 10-0 bass, on homemade lure. Lots of 9-0s, 8-0s and smaller, caught on shad and crawdads. Catfish bite fair in shallows. Terry Baker, Ventura, 15-8 catfish, on night crawler. Crappie action picking up.

22. CORONA LAKE--Most are targeting trout, and a few lunkers are being landed, but bluegill, crappie and hybrid striped bass--all being caught on mini-jigs--are becoming more active. Largest trout, a 7-2 by Rick Budde, Poway, while trolling a Roostertail.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Eight trout were weighed in at more than 10 pounds--the largest a 17-7 by Jeremy River, Anaheim, on a night crawler--and several others were close. Largemouth bass and hybrid striped bass, as well as catfish, are beginning to bite.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Trout biting on lures, mostly during morning hours. Jeff Banner, Downey, 11-4 trout, on crawdad-pattern plug. Largemouth bass action steady for those throwing spinnerbaits near shoreline. Crappie becoming very active, biting on mini-jigs in coves. Note: Sunday children under 16 can fish for free when accompanied by a paying adult.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout bite is slowing as fish become scattered. Most biting on salmon eggs and night crawlers. Largemouth bass very active and biting readily on small crankbaits and poppers. Lord Tucker, San Diego, 6-12 bass, on Zara Spook lure at flats just before dark. Bluegill and crappie action very good. About 5,000 pounds of catfish were stocked before Thursday’s opener.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass, catfish, trout and largemouth bass all being caught sporadically on standard baits and lures. Largest striper was a 12-pounder caught on an anchovy. Largest largemouth was a 7-pounder caught on a night crawler.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass fair, averaging 10-14 inches, with some much bigger. Del East, San Bernardino, 10-2 largemouth bass, on E-Trout lure at point near lifeguard headquarters. Bluegill action picking up, biting among trees on night crawler pieces, crickets and worms. Trout bite fair.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--A lake-record largemouth bass--7-2--was caught by Corey Pefley, San Bernardino, on a night crawler near the observatory.

31. BISHOP--Best bet remains the Bishop Creek Canyon area above town. The creek is yielding limits and South Lake and Lake Sabrina are nearly ice free, producing occasional fish in the 5-0 range. Night crawlers and gold lures doing well. Road to North Lake still closed.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES--Lake Crowley good for limits or near-limits of rainbow trout averaging 1-2 pounds, with an occasional larger brown or rainbow. Bigger fish coming on night crawlers and trolled lures such as Rapalas. Twin Lakes picking up after a slow opening week.

33. JUNE LAKE--Gull Lake best bet for big fish--an 8 1/4-pounder was caught opening day--but all lakes along loop producing steady catches of small rainbows and an occasional lunker. Rush Creek still flowing too fast for good fishing.

34. BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Reservoir remains the best bet for quality and quantity, with rainbows and browns averaging 2-4 pounds taking all sorts of baits and lures.

2. MORRO BAY (Bob’s Sportfishing)--7 anglers (1 boat): 70 red rock cod, 35 rockfish.

3. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--8 anglers (1 boat): 85 rock cod, 2 ling cod, 35 red snapper.

4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--22 anglers (1 boat): 10 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 1 cabezon, 1 sculpin, 10 rockfish. (Hornet’s Landing)--9 anglers (1 boat): 1 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 22 barracuda, 1 rockfish.

5. VENTURA--9 anglers (1 boat): 1 calico bass, 3 sand bass, 8 barracuda, 23 rockfish, 1 sculpin.

8. MARINA DEL REY--50 anglers (4 boats): 94 sand bass, 41 calico bass, 2 cabezon, 24 perch, 12 sculpin, 1 sheephead.

9. REDONDO BEACH--52 anglers (3 boats): 27 calico bass, 26 sand bass, 35 salmon grouper, 2 sculpin, 1 black sea bass (released), 34 rockfish.

10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--58 anglers (3 boats): 114 barracuda, 1 yellowtail, 27 bonito, 26 blue perch, 9 halibut, 62 calico bass, 6 sand bass, 7 sculpin, 3 sheephead, 4 whitefish, 4 sargo. (22nd St. Landing)--53 anglers (4 boats): 7 calico bass, 2 halibut, 320 barracuda, 16 sand bass, 19 bonito, 19 sculpin, 6 whitefish.

11. LONG BEACH--51 anglers (3 boats): 81 barracuda, 37 calico bass, 18 sand bass, 2 white sea bass, 4 halibut, 20 sculpin, 1 rockfish, 1 cabezon. (Belmont Pier)--9 anglers (1 boat): 4 barracuda, 17 calico bass, 1 halibut, 4 sand bass, 2 sculpin.

12. SEAL BEACH--30 anglers (1 boat): 2 perch, 15 sculpin, 240 rockfish.

13. NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--37 anglers (3 boats): 58 sand bass, 63 calico bass, 3 rockfish, 11 sculpin, 1 halibut, 50 barracuda, 1 sole, 75 mackerel.
