Letters to Voices : Gay, Lesbian Votes For School Bonds

I very much appreciated Heather Carrigan’s essay (“I’ve Never Been Bashed by an Educated Person,” Community Essay, April 19).
I come from a long line of Republicans, most of whom were critical of “free” public education, and nonetheless, I have always supported school bonds and anything else that will improve education, and this was long before I became an employee at the University of California. I have watched with dismay the decline of California’s public education system from one of the best in the nation (in the 50’s, when I was fortunate enough to benefit from it) to one of the worst, according to many measures.
My belief in the value of education for all persons is as “instinctive” as Heather’s, and antedates my coming out by more than 20 years!
