It’s Easy as 2, 3 for No. 1 Van Nuys

Vincent Shu, at No. 2 singles, and No. 3 Kevin Sauk each swept four sets for top-seeded Van Nuys High in a 21-8 1/2 victory over Monroe in a City Section 3-A Division boys’ tennis quarterfinal match Friday at Van Nuys.

Jake Chiang and Alex Mangu swept at No. 1 doubles for the Wolves (14-1), who will face Kennedy in the semifinals Tuesday at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

Monroe (11-4) lost three times to Van Nuys this season.

Kennedy 20, Carson 9 1/2--Sonny Warda swept four sets at No. 1 singles and the Golden Cougars (10-5) lost only two of 12 sets in the top three singles positions against the Colts (13-2) in a 3-A quarterfinal match at Carson.

Birmingham 18, Westchester 11 1/2--Anthony Gabriele ran his record to 24-0 for the Braves (10-5) with 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1 singles in a 3-A quarterfinal match at Birmingham.

The Braves will play Eagle Rock in the semifinals.

BOYS’ TRACK

Monroe 64, North Hollywood 63--Victor Hall won the 100-meter and 220-yard dashes and the Vikings claimed the Valley Pac-8 Conference title at Monroe.

Hall ran a leg on the winning 440-yard relay team for the Vikings (7-0, 7-0).

Taft 107, San Fernando 13--Cameron Shimy had a career-best 13-3 in the pole vault for the Toreadors (6-1, 6-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet.

GIRLS’ TRACK

El Camino Real 88, Kennedy 33--Bree Akesson won the mile in 5:31.1 and the 880-yard run in 2:35.6 for the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference meet at El Camino Real (4-3, 4-3).

Birmingham 61, Cleveland 57--Tiffany Burgess, who earlier won the 1,600 meters, provided the winning points in a Northwest Valley Conference meet by winning the 3,200 at Birmingham.

Juana Gaston won the 100 high hurdles and the 300 lows for the Braves (7-0, 7-0).
