In other Southern California sectional softball games:
Cypress 8, Saddleback 0 (6, mercy)--Sophomore right-hander Jamie Wilkes pitched a one-hit shutout for third-seeded Cypress (30-18), which won the regional championships to advance to the state tournament.
Michele Bailon was two for four with four RBIs to lead Cypress.
Saddleback (18-21), 14th-seeded, was forced to play most of the game with eight players after Shawnie Gordon injured her right ankle on a play at first base.
Saddleback defeated 11th-seeded Cuesta (30-18), 3-1, and No. 6 Antelope Valley (30-19), 6-4, in two elimination games to advance to the regional final.
Palomar 2, Rancho Santiago 2 (7, darkness)--Remy Amaro singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for Rancho Santiago (31-19) and after two sacrifices she came home on a single by Melissa Cruz. Cruz was three for three in the game. With the score tied, 2-2, both coaches and the umpires decided to suspend the game because of darkness. The game will be resumed at 4 p.m. Monday at Palomar. The winner will advance to the state playoffs.
In the first game in the title round, Cathy Paiz held Rancho Santiago to four hits as Palomar (31-12) defeated the Dons, 4-2. Palomar was sent to the consolation bracket Friday when it was defeated by Rancho Santiago, 2-1.
In women’s tennis at the state championship tournament:
Erickson, Gilliam lose in semifinals--Cami Erickson and Whitney Gilliam of Orange Coast were defeated, 6-1, 6-1, in their semifinal match against Grossmont’s Kyoko Maebara and Caroline Medlock at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno.
