Re “Who Remembers the Invasion of Catalina?” by Frank del Olmo, Commentary, June 29: In answer to Del Olmo’s question, we say millions of Chicanos who are still committed to the Movimiento remember the occupation of Catalina Island by the Brown Berets. In fact, this August we will be returning to Catalina to commemorate 25 years since the invasion.
The problem is that many Mexican Americans who have since joined the mainstream have lost touch with our community. As an example, on June 28 the Brown Berets and the National Huelga Committee held a press conference on our call for a one-day no-school and no-work stoppage on Oct. 15 to protest discrimination; no one from The Times showed up.
Will The Times cover our return to Catalina Island?
