Harriet P. Payne; Conductor for Glendale, Long Beach Symphonies

Harriet P. Payne, 85, musical composer and conductor of the Glendale and Long Beach symphony orchestras. She taught music at USC and Cal State Fullerton, as well as in Los Angeles city schools for 15 years. Her compositions, including “Phantasy for String Orchestra,” were performed as far away as Pittsburgh and Miami. She was in the first violin section with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony and the Cincinnati Symphony. From 1979 to 1994, she was principal violist and personnel manager for the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. She is survived by a brother, Charles. On Monday in Orange from complications of a stroke.
