Police Department Given $1-Million Grant

The city’s Police Department is one of 21 in the country awarded a $1-million grant to promote community policing, city officials announced Thursday.

The Community Oriented Policing Services grant from the U.S. Justice Department may not be used to hire new officers, Mayor Miguel A. Pulido Jr. said. Rather, the money will be used to help showcase the community policing efforts already in place and promote closer ties with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Santa Ana will be designated a Community Policing Demonstration Center, with other police departments expected to visit and observe city programs, Pulido said. Part of the grant will likely be used for a manual explaining city community policing policies.

Other money will be used to better coordinate efforts with other law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and possibly sharing database information to better track suspects, Pulido said.
