Cerritos has received an award from the League of California Cities for its innovative program for at-risk youths.
Impact (Intercepting Minors With Positive Attention, Care and Training) is a year-round program conducted in all of the city’s elementary and junior high schools by a sheriff’s deputy who works for the city.
The program attempts to steer youths away from negative and self-destructive choices such as drugs and gangs and toward positive activities such as sports and supervised recreation in parks, said community safety manager Mike Fleager.
