Foes File Lawsuit to Stop Low-Income Housing Plan

Opponents of a Habitat for Humanity housing project slated for a greenbelt area in Wilmington have filed a lawsuit in Superior Court to stop the project.

Named as defendants were the city of Los Angeles, Southern Pacific Real Estate Enterprises and Habitat for Humanity.

In the lawsuit filed Friday, members of the Wilmington Citizens Committee, which wants the 1.8-acre parcel of vacant land turned into a park, said they were not notified, as requested, when the Los Angeles City Council took a vote to turn the property over to Habitat for Humanity, which wants to build 13 duplexes that would be sold to low-income families.

The Los Angeles City Council voted Oct. 22 to deed the land to the nonprofit organization.
