Humane Deaths Without ‘Screams’
Regarding Madeleine Brink’s letter about the pain lobsters feel when cooked (“Lobsters’ Pain,” Oct. 22), I would hope to put her heart at ease.
I have witnessed the cooking of many lobsters. Never have I heard a “scream” when they are put into the water. Further, all movement stops within a second or two of the lobster hitting the water, leading me to believe that death comes almost instantaneously. The thought that they “live up to 12 minutes in boiling water” is ridiculous. I don’t believe a grown man or gorilla could do that.
The truth is, any animal we humans eat has to be killed first. Putting the vegetarians’ argument aside, this quick, clean death may be one of the most humane ways of all.
