Los Angeles police have arrested a man suspected of kidnapping and attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl on her way to Birmingham High School on Friday.
Police said the girl was waiting for a friend Friday morning at Vanowen Street and Balboa Boulevard when Jalil Abdul Aziz, 23, of Northridge, forced her into his vehicle. He then allegedly drove to an undisclosed location and attempted to rape her.
The girl escaped and notified police, who arrested Aziz on Friday night. LAPD Det. Corrine Malinka said the girl identified Aziz, whom she did not know before Friday.
Aziz is being held at the Van Nuys jail in lieu of $1-million bail on suspicion of kidnapping of a child under 14.
Police declined Monday to release key details of the incident, such as where the alleged attack took place and how the girl escaped, pending filing of the case with the district attorney’s office todayy. Nor would they comment on the extenuating factors contributing to what they term an “enhanced” bail.
Malinka said investigators are trying to determine whether Aziz has been involved in other incidents of this kind.
