If It’s Sunday Night, It Must Be a Movie Night

Get your VCRs warmed up for a big movie night this Sunday.

Jaclyn Smith stars in the Family Channel drama “Married to a Stranger,” at 7 p.m. Based on a true story, the film finds Smith playing a woman with amnesia who regresses to the age of 16 after suffering a head injury.

ABC kicks off its ‘90s version of “The Wonderful World of Disney,” at 7 p.m. on Channel 7, with the boffo 1995 computer animated blockbuster, “Toy Story.” Tom Hanks and Tim Allen provide the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

David Caruso and Marg Helgenberger star in “Gold Coast” at 8 p.m. on Showtime. Peter Weller directed this crime drama, adapted from Elmore Leonard’s book about a Mafia widow, a thief and a ruthless cowboy (Jeff Kober).

Maureen McCormick (also known as Marsha Brady) stars in CBS’ “Get to the Heart: The Barbara Mandrell Story” at 9 p.m. on Channel 2. The bio-pic chronicles the country singer’s rise to stardom and her recovery from the car accident that nearly killed her.

Elizabeth Perkins and Alan Rosenberg star in NBC’s “Cloned” at 9 p.m. on Channel 4. In this thriller, Perkins plays a woman who learns that her dead 8-year-old son has been duplicated by a fertility specialist.

Melissa Joan Hart of “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” fame stars in ABC’s “Two Came Back” at 9 p.m. on Channel 7. Hart plays a young woman on a boat trip from San Diego to Vancouver that turns into a nightmare when the vessel steers off course and is caught in a storm.

Today

Lifetime presents “The First Superstars,” the third installment of its women’s sports series, “Breaking Through,” at 7 p.m. The special looks at the achievements of skater Peggy Fleming, tennis ace Billie Jean King and gymnast Nadia Comaneci.

NBC premieres two new comedies: at 8:30 p.m. is “Union Square,” which focuses on the diverse regulars at a New York City diner; at 9:30 p.m. is “Veronica’s Closet,” which heralds Emmy-winner Kirstie Alley’s return to series TV. She plays a former model who runs a Victoria’s Secret-type clothing company. (Please see reviews on Page 50.)

NBC’s seemingly unstoppable “Must See TV” mainstays, “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” have their season premieres at 8 and 9 p.m. respectively.

“Promised Land,” the spinoff of CBS’ “Touched by an Angel,” kicks off its second season at a new day and time, at 8 p.m. on Channel 2.

Top-rated dramatic series “ER” celebrates its fourth season premiere at 10 p.m. on Channel 4 with a live episode in which a documentary film crew visits the hospital.

Friday

ABC adds two new comedies to its “TGIF” lineup: “You Wish,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 7, is about a divorcee (Harley Jane Kozak) with two kids and a randy genie (John Ales); “Teen Angel,” at 9:30 p.m., stars Mike Damus as a teen who dies after eating a bad burger, only to be sent back to Earth to be guardian to his best pal.

“Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” kicks off its second season with a one-hour installment at 8 p.m. on Channel 7.

Gary Owens narrates “It’s So L.A., Too” at 8 p.m. on KCOP-TV Channel 13; it’s a special that takes a look at the city’s best dance clubs, Sunday brunches and late-night hangouts.

Saturday

ABC’s kids’ series, “Brand Spanking New Doug,” serves up an unusual episode at 7:30 a.m. on Channel 7. The show examines self-esteem as Doug’s friend, Patty Mayonnaise, develops an eating disorder while dieting.

KCOP-TV Channel 13 premieres three syndicated series: “Conan,” a sword-and-scorcery adventure starring Ralf Moeller, at 6 p.m.; “Soldier of Fortune Inc.,” an action-adventure hour starring Brad Johnson, at 7 p.m.; and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” a family series starring Peter Scolari and based on the hit Disney films, at 8 p.m.

Stacy Keach returns as Mickey Spillane’s gumshoe Mike Hammer in the new syndicated mystery series, “Mike Hammer, Private Eye,” premiering at 11 p.m. on Channel 9.

CBS’ popular Saturday night lineup returns for a new season on Channel 2: “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” at 8 p.m., “Early Edition” at 9 p.m. and “Walker, Texas Ranger” at 10 p.m.

Richard Kiley narrates the “National Geographic” documentary, “The Sonoran Desert: A Violent Eden,” at 8 p.m. on Channel 4.

ABC premieres its two additions to its Saturday lineup: at 8 p.m. is “C-16,” an action show starring Eric Roberts as the head of an elite FBI unit, and at 9 p.m. is “Total Security,” Steven Bochco’s latest, starring James Remar and James Belushi as partners in a Los Angeles security company.

Sunday

TBS airs “Cousteau: Sanctuaries for Life,” at 7 p.m.; it’s one of the last documentaries the legendary Jacques Cousteau made before his death earlier this year.

NBC’s revamped “Men Behaving Badly” returns at 8 p.m. on Channel 4.

Jenny McCarthy, a former Playboy Playmate, MTV personality and spokesperson for Candies Shoes, headlines the new NBC comedy, “Jenny,” at 8:30 p.m. on Channel 4.
