Walk to Aid Victims of Memory Disorders

A four-mile beach walk to raise money for people with Alzheimer’s disease and similar memory loss disorders will be held Saturday at San Buenaventura State Beach, organizers said.

The Alzheimer’s Assn. of Ventura County, sponsor of the event, hopes its fifth Memory Walk will draw 250 to 300 participants, said Ann Booze, executive director of the organization.

Wrong date--The date of the annual Memory Walk fund-raiser sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Assn. of Ventura County was incorrectly reported in an article Friday. Registration for the walk will be at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by the walk at 10 a.m.

Last year’s event raised $20,000, which went to help people suffering from the disease, she said.

“We raise the money through the $15 registration fee,” Booze said. “For that, you get a T-shirt and a goodie bag filled with items donated by supporters.” Also, walkers seek sponsors to pledge money to the fund-raising event, she said.

Walkers will take about two hours to traverse a four-mile round-trip route, Booze said. Participants and supporters can meet at noon for a post-walk tri-tip barbecue.

According to the organization, 5,000 people in Ventura County are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Another 15,000 people have related memory disorders, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease or heart disease.
