Starr Seeks More Whitewater Data

Independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr’s office has sent new subpoenas to the White House seeking information about any contacts that President Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton or many of their aides might have had with several now-convicted figures in the Whitewater investigation, sources said. The subpoenas, issued by a grand jury in Little Rock, Ark., seek information about contacts the Clintons, their White House lawyers or other aides might have had with lawyers for former Justice Department official Webster L. Hubbell and the Clintons’ former Whitewater business partners, James B. and Susan McDougal, said an attorney who has seen the documents. The McDougals and Hubbell were convicted in cases growing out of the Whitewater inquiry. Hubbell pleaded guilty to bilking his old law firm and clients and agreed to cooperate with the investigation, but his lack of recall of key events subsequently frustrated prosecutors.
