City Cites Properties That Violate Codes

The city has begun its crackdown on errant property owners who refuse to clean up their land.
The City Council this week declared 50 properties public nuisances because of overgrown weeds or excessive debris. Under city code, if property owners do not clear their land within a week, the city will do so--at the owners’ expense.
The city has budgeted $5,000 to hire a private contractor to clear the properties. The cost will be charged to property owners. If they do not pay, the city can place liens on the properties or attempt to get payment through county taxes.
