‘Say Aaah’ : StayWell : Itchy Swelling: When the Eyes Have It
- Share via
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids and, in some cases, the membrane covering the inside of the eyelid and the white of the eye. The ailment can be caused by bacteria or oily skin, or sometimes a combination of the two. (Dandruff may also be to blame in some cases.)
Signs and symptoms are redness, swelling and tenderness of the eyelids, and itching, as well as flakes or scales around the eyelashes. Another symptom is crusting at the base of the eyelashes during sleep, and that can cause the lashes to fall out.
What can you do to reduce your risk of becoming afflicted? Come clean: Get used to warm compresses, which can help keep the eyelids clean and reduce redness and swelling.
To apply a warm compress:
* Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
* Wet a clean washcloth with warm water, then wring it out.
* Place the washcloth over your eyelids (eyes closed, of course) for about three minutes. This will help loosen scales or crusts.
* Wet the washcloth as often as needed to keep it warm. Repeat two or more times a day if needed.
You should also wash your hands before touching your eyes. Wash your hair often (to control dandruff). Keep contact lenses clean because they can aggravate symptoms. If you wear makeup, buy new supplies often, and don’t wear makeup until the inflammation goes away.
Blepharitis usually isn’t serious. Conscientious self-care and treatment can control the problem in most cases. Your doctor may prescribe eyedrops, ointment or another course of treatment.
