The city’s new downtown area could get an additional retail outlet if the Planning Commission approves a developer’s request to carve out more space in the area for a music store. Developers have requested 9,000 square feet to make sure Tower Books and Records has enough room for inventory. The store was originally planned as a one-story, but revised designs call for a second floor, said David Martin, a representative of CIM Group, which is also developing downtown’s Birch Street Promenade.
If approved at Tuesday’s meeting, the shopping area--Superblocks--will include a total of 98,938 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
The Superblocks, the last part of the downtown project, are north of Imperial Highway, south of Ash Street and between Brea Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Construction is scheduled to begin next month and the buildings are expected to be finished by April.
