Faction to Halt Use of Episcopal Name

NEWARK, N.J. — A conservative Episcopal faction that used the church’s name to promote its agenda on the Internet has agreed to stop the practice after a lawsuit was filed by liberal bishops.
Under a deal approved earlier this month by U.S. District Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, Bishop William C. Wantland of Wisconsin agreed to stop using the name of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America--and its acronym.
In return, the New Jersey bishops agreed to drop claims for damages.
Wantland’s conservative faction had used the church name for a Wisconsin corporation, and its initials for a Web site that opposes liberal positions.
Wantland opposes the ordination of women and homosexuals. He was among 10 bishops who failed in an attempt to try a retired bishop, Walter Righter, for heresy for ordaining the Rev. Barry Stopfel, a gay man.
