Suspects in Yosemite Deaths in Custody

MODESTO — Investigators probing the kidnapping and murder of three women near Yosemite National Park in February say “the main players” in the crime are now in custody, although no arrests have been made and they are not identifying any suspects.
Nick Rossi, an FBI spokesman, confirmed news media reports that a handful of men already in jail on unrelated drugs or weapons charges were probably involved in the triple homicide.
“In an effort to reassure the public, especially now that summer tourist season is under way, investigators have simply acknowledged that this case is not a manhunt with suspected serial killers on the loose,” Rossi said Friday.
Carole Sund, her daughter, Juliana, 15, and visiting Argentine student Silvina Pelosso, 16, disappeared Feb. 15 while on a trip to Yosemite. Their bodies were found a month later.
Investigators, while declining to identify suspects by name, have focused on a number of Modesto-area residents with criminal histories including assaults on women and drug convictions. Several of these men are now in jail on unrelated charges.
