Health officials in Albany, N.Y., reported 159 cases of potentially fatal E. coli apparently stemming from contaminated water at the Washington County Fair in the largest epidemic stemming from the bacteria in state history. “Up to now we have 159 cases, 45 are hospitalized . . . of what appears to be an E. coli epidemic,” New York State Health Commissioner Antonia Novello said. Rachel Aldrich, a 3-year-old from Schenectady, died from kidney failure as a complication of E. coli infection.
