Ship Is Source of Oil Spill Near Humboldt Bay

EUREKA, Calif. — The crew of a dredging vessel with a punctured fuel tank stemmed the flow of oil leaking just outside Humboldt Bay, but not until about 2,000 gallons spilled into the water, the Coast Guard said Tuesday.
The oil from the motor vessel Stuyvesant appeared to be clumping, Coast Guard Lt. Richard Teubner said. There was no evidence that any had washed ashore.
“We’re trying to figure out exactly where it is and where it’s going,” Teubner said.
A cutter on the scene reported no sheen trailing the vessel, indicating that the flow had been halted, Teubner said. The fuel, which had been leaking from the vessel’s starboard side, is similar to home heating oil, a heavy fuel that flows slowly.
Crew members moved the remaining fuel to empty tanks on the other side of the ship and tilted it enough to bring the puncture out of the water.
