COMPANY TOWN : Artists Management to Add Sports Unit

Artists Management Group, the company founded by former Hollywood agent Michael Ovitz, announced Thursday that it is adding a sports division to be run by sports agent Jeff Schwartz, whose clients include tennis superstar Pete Sampras.
The company said that its AMG Sports division will manage athletes, consult teams, develop sports programs for TV and new media and develop merchandise, marketing and sponsorship deals for clients. The move marks a further blending of the sports world with Hollywood as an increasing number of athletes are seeking entertainment-related opportunities and Hollywood executives are looking for business ventures tied to famous athletes.
Schwartz, formerly with sports powerhouse International Management Group, was sued by IMG after he left in February to form his own law firm. IMG alleged that Schwartz planned to steal clients. Schwartz denied the allegations, and the two sides settled the dispute in March.
