PALMDALE — A body charred beyond recognition was discovered early Thursday inside a burning taxicab, authorities said.
A passing motorist called authorities after seeing the car engulfed in flames in a church parking lot in the 37700 block of Palm Vista Avenue in Palmdale, said Deputy Bruce Thomas, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
After the fire was extinguished, sheriff’s deputies found a body inside the cab, which was owned by the United Independent Cab Co. of Lancaster, Thomas said.
Sheriff’s investigators are trying to determine what routes the taxi had taken and who the driver might have been, Thomas said.
Because the body was so badly burned, authorities have not yet been able to determine the sex, race or age of the victim. The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (323) 890-5500 or (661) 267-4300.
