Merchant Marines

On Memorial Day, as we decorate the graves of those who served their country, perhaps we could spare a moment of thought for the 50,000 icy graves in the North Atlantic and other seas.
No flowers for them, no bugle calls, no folded flags, unknown except for family and kin. We who survived the open boat, the day in the life jacket, remember all too well our missing comrades.
It would be a noble gesture if when delivering a well-deserved tribute to our armed forces someone would say of the men and boys of the merchant marine, “They also served.”
