Road Rage Cited in Killings of Sisters at Purdue

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue graduate student from China told police that road rage led him to kill a fellow student and her sister, court documents filed Monday allege.

Zhan Yin, 27, told police he committed the first murder before he knew the victim was the sister of a fellow student.

Yin was formally charged Monday in Tippecanoe Superior Court with two counts of murder and 10 other felonies related to the Aug. 2 slayings of Yeunkyung Woo, 31, a doctoral student in biology at Purdue, and her sister Hyo Kyung Woo, 29, of Chicago.

An affidavit filed Monday alleged that Yin told police he followed Hyo Kyung Woo to the apartment on the Purdue campus and killed her after a car she was driving nearly hit him while he was bicycling.

Yin reportedly told police he followed Woo home and hit her repeatedly with a hammer he had in his backpack. When her sister came home he allegedly also beat her with the hammer and stabbed her in the throat.
