Regarding the tragic story of the disabled girl in Ukraine who was imprisoned by her parents in a cowshed for 23 years, Aug. 10: Certainly this example of man’s inhumanity to man is sad and shocking. But let’s not be too self-righteous. I live in Santa Monica and, if you’d told me 10 years ago that I’d see a homeless woman old enough to be my grandmother living on the street in filth and isolation and, further, that I’d think there was little or nothing I could do to help; and, finally, that I’d walk right by her, I wouldn’t have believed you.
