PORT ALLEN, Hawaii — A 20-foot humpback whale leaped onto a whale-watching boat and broke a tourist’s knee, a tour official said Wednesday.
Sandra Gieb was sitting in the rear of the 40-foot motorized catamaran Tuesday when the whale surfaced and put its head over the transom, said Doug Phillips, co-owner of Na Pali Eco Adventures.
The 1-year-old whale then slipped back into the water and swam away from the boat, which had stopped for lunch, Phillips said.
Gieb was admitted to a hospital in satisfactory condition.
Juvenile whales are high-strung and unpredictable, Phillips said.
Fully grown humpbacks can be 45 feet long and weigh 40 tons.
