French police captured the suspected military chief of the Basque separatist group ETA hours after two people were killed in a car bombing in Spain’s Basque region.
Francisco Javier Garcia Gaztelu, 35, who was seized in the French town of Anglet, was believed to have ordered the bombing in San Sebastian, Spanish state radio reported. He was one of Spain’s most wanted fugitives.
The bombing came two days after the Basque regional government called early parliamentary elections for May 13. The attack was widely seen as a sign of the ETA’s determination to disrupt an already tense political campaign.
