Vote on Living Wage Law Is Delayed Again

The City Council has postponed until July 24 a vote on its long-debated living wage ordinance, which would increase the minimum wage to $10.50 for some workers in the beach and downtown areas.
Citing unspecified concerns over the ordinance’s language, the council voted 6 to 1 on Tuesday to refer questions to city staff.
It is the second time the council has delayed almost-certain passage of a law expected to provoke an attempted referendum and lawsuits.
“There [are] not in any way any second doubts about the policy,” said Councilman Ken Genser. “We just want to make sure we crafted the language in the right way.”
