Searchers found the body of man who drowned near the Manhattan Beach pier Friday, authorities said.
The man, who was not identified, was swimming with a friend, said lifeguard Capt. Philip Topar.
The friend was caught in a rip current about 4:40 p.m., and a lifeguard spotted him.
“He told the lifeguard that he thought his buddy was out there with him,” Topar said.
About 20 lifeguards, along with a dive team and rescue boats, began searching the area. Coast Guard and county Fire Department helicopters joined in.
At 5:55 p.m., a helicopter crew spotted the body on the ocean floor at a depth of about 8 feet 100 yards north of the pier.
