A man shot by police was identified Friday as John Curtis Ford.
Ford, 27, of Orange remained hospitalized at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was being treated for three gunshot wounds, to the neck and stomach.
Police responded to Eisenhower Park at 3 p.m. Thursday after a caller reported a person loitering in the north parking lot. When officers arrived, Ford placed one hand behind his back and told police he had a gun, Police Sgt. Dave Hill said.
Several officers fired at Ford as he lunged at them, Hill said. Investigators determined later that Ford was unarmed.
Police did not identify the officers, citing their privacy, but may do so next week, Hill said. The officers will be off duty while the department investigates the incident. The Orange County district attorney’s office also is investigating.
