Hundreds Visit Pentagon in Gestures of Support

The wounded western face of the Pentagon drew hundreds of people who wanted to witness the hijackers’ work for themselves and show support for the military operation in Afghanistan.
People streamed to and from the scene throughout the day, nearly all growing teary-eyed at the sight of the jagged, charred gash created when a Boeing 757 tore into the massive structure Sept. 11, killing 189. Many bent to talk to their children. Others stood silently or hugged one another.
“Anybody who is antiwar should come here and see this,” Shirley Royall of North Carolina said, watching workers dump debris from shattered windows.
