2 Flee as Fire Destroys House and 2 Cars

A fire possibly caused by a malfunctioning appliance swept through an Oak View home Friday afternoon, destroying it and two cars.
The single-story home in the 1100 block of North Ventura Avenue caught fire before 3 p.m. An elderly woman and a child escaped when the smoke alarm went off, fire officials said.
When firefighters arrived at 3:07 p.m., half the house was engulfed. The home and two cars were listed as total losses with combined damages of $275,000.
