You Can’t Fight City Hall, So Check There First

Before beginning any home improvement project, find out if it requires city approval.
Many seemingly small changes, like switching light fixtures and changing certain windows, need approval in some cities.
The addition of a deck often requires municipal approval.
Be sure that the person you hire is licensed to do that type of work. For instance, a flooring contractor may say he’s licensed, but his license may be for plumbing.
To contact the Contractors State License Board, call (800) 321-2752 or visit its Web site at https://www.cslb.ca.gov.
Finally, before committing, get in writing the price, the amount of time necessary to complete the job and the penalty (usually a fee reduction) should the job exceed the estimated time.
