Patriotism Goes Into Every Badge

They call themselves the Peaceful Little Art Co.--Carmen Scozzari and Sadie Vilensky, residents at Woodland Park Retirement Hotel and the force behind a patriotic badge-making project.
“We’re in it for as long as it takes,” says Scozzari, who, at 48, seems an unlikely resident, but she moved here three months ago for the assisted-living services she needs because of a neurological disorder. She came up with the badge idea after talking to Vilensky about “feelings of helplessness and hopelessness” post-Sept. 11.
Now Scozzari is busy on her computer creating 40 different designs decorated with flags, peace signs and the New York City skyline. “The ideas just keep coming” from her elderly friends who sell the badges for $1 each. So far, residents and staff have raised $450 for the American Red Cross by offering the badges to friends and acquaintances wherever they go.
