Esperanza Girls Finish Third in San Francisco

The Anaheim Esperanza girls’ cross-country team finished third Saturday at the Great Race of the Great Bay in San Francisco. The Aztecs were led by senior Shalice Pugmire in 14th place at 19:07.1 over the three-mile course. Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) won the girls’ event and Orem (Utah) Mountain View was second.

Emily Vince, a senior at Palos Verdes Peninsula, took fifth in 18:18 and was the top finisher from the region. Ukiah’s Amber Trotter won the girls’ race in 17:21.

In the boys’ competition, Matt McKeehan of Santa Ana Foothill finished fifth in 15:53.2 to help the Knights place 11th. Oak Park finished in 10th.

Bobby Curtis, a junior at Louisville (Ky.) St. Xavier was the overall winner in 15:29.3, and Cincinnati La Salle won the team title.

Laguna Hills Invitational--Irvine Woodbridge’s Michael Haddan had the top overall time at the meet, winning on the three-mile course in 15:09.

Huntington Beach Marina’s Raemon Rodriguez won the senior race in 15:16, followed by Santa Ana’s Diego Rocha in 15:20. Juan Robles of Placentia Valencia won the junior race in 15:24, the fourth-best time of the meet.

Marina produced the top combined team time, followed by Long Beach Poly, the top-ranked boys’ team in the nation.

Corona del Mar’s Julie Allen had the fastest time in the girls’ competition, winning the senior race in 17:34. Kristin Cohoon of Palos Verdes Chadwick was second in 17:56 and Jenny Sears of Irvine Woodbridge finished third in 18:01.

Yucaipa had the fastest team time, followed by Woodbridge and Dana Point Dana Hills.

Las Vegas Invitational--Riverside Rubidoux won the large-school division as Lino Flores placed fifth on the 2.8-mile course in 15:38. The Falcons had four other runners in the top 20.

Fountain Valley’s Mike Gavino had the top result among Southland runners, finishing third in 15:28 to help the Barons place second with 94 points

Bosco Tech Invitational--Mark Batras of Bosco Tech won in 14:50 to help Bosco Tech win the boys’ large school team title.

Alyson Hancock led Thousand Oaks to the girls’ large school team title and tied with Laura Meyers of Maranantha for the fastest time of the day at 18:33.

Long Beach Millikan Invitational--Cypress junior David Napper won the boys’ event and recorded the third-fastest time in meet history with 15:12 over the three-mile course.

FOOTBALL

L.A. Loyola 35, San Francisco St. Ignatius 0--Adam Gonzalez completed nine of 13 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Bo Renaud rushed for 68 yards and three touchdowns in 17 carries for the Cubs at Glendale High.

L.A. Murphy 54, Palos Verdes Chadwick 14--Lawrence Hollis rushed 17 times for 301 yards and four touchdowns and also returned an interception 95 yards for a score in the Nobles’ victory at Chadwick.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Huntington Beach Edison 16, La Habra 5--Cody Tague scored six goals and Matt Budnick scored four and had three steals for Edison (1-0).

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 6, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 3--Harvard-Westlake, ranked second in the Southern Section Division I poll, defeated the top-ranked team in Division III in a match at Mira Costa.

Dana Hills 8, Tustin 6--Jake Herman and Tony Kezarian both scored three goals for Dana Hills in the nonleague opener for both teams.
