Airports Crammed With Rerouted U.S. Flights

The tarmacs of airports across Canada were filled to overflowing with stranded aircraft as the United States closed its airspace.

From Vancouver on the west coast to the remote Goose Bay air base in Labrador, wide-bodied aircraft from around the world landed amid tight security, and passengers emerged stunned by events south of the border.

All domestic Canadian flights were canceled as airports prepared to accept the diverted planes.

The Canadian military was put on alert, and major government and tourist sites were closed, including Parliament Hill in the capital, Ottawa, and the tall CN Tower in Toronto. The U.S. Embassy was closed and under increased security.

Some border posts temporarily closed, but reports that the entire frontier would be sealed proved untrue.
