Social Security Will Expedite Claims
The Social Security Administration has set up emergency handling procedures to quickly aid victims injured in last week’s terrorist attacks and the families of the people who were killed.
Some family members could be eligible for survivor benefits if the victim had enough work history to qualify. The minimum varies, depending on age, though no one needs more than 10 years of work.
Disability benefits also are available to people with enough work history who have a severe physical or mental impairment that is expected to prevent them from doing substantial work for a year or longer. Family members also could be eligible for disability benefits if the worker qualifies.
